Normally I am not a huge fan of sci-fi type books. But I was presently shocked by In Ageless Sleep by Arden Ellis.
I went into this book think that it wasn’t really for me but I couldn’t have been more wrong. I like how it blended traditional fairy tale with modern sci-fi. It was a quick read of about 52 pages. But the author was able to make the characters come to life for me. I particularly liked the character Mal. She was just the right amount of snarky and flawed for my tastes.
My only problem with the book is a wish it was longer. I picked it up thinking it was a full-length novel. I feel like more could have been added to develop the characters and their relationship. But the ending leaves it open to a possible sequel. Fingers crossed.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is in the mood for a short light-hearted jaunt through space.

In Ageless Sleep is a great novelette. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a short sci-fi romance with no cliffhanger.
This is a character-driven story, and Mal and Rory are really brought to life well. The world creation is also intriguing. I would love to read more books set in this world. There is good sci-fi suspense as well as some romantic suspense. This is a complete story with a satisfying ending.
Now and then I come across a short story that is completely satisfying as far as plot, characters, and engagement. I don’t find them often, but stories like this one are real treasures.
There are no explicit scenes in this story, so I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone looking for erotic romance.
All in all, I loved this story. It’s the first I’ve read by Arden Ellis, but I’ll be watching for more.

This is an enjoyable, thoughtful Sleeping Beauty retelling with a bit of Stockholm/Lima Syndrome thrown in for good measure out in the distant reaches of space travel.
It’s a pretty simple tale, focusing mostly on Mal, since everyone else is asleep while she drifts around in her captured spaceship, waiting for the moment when either her own people or the enemy track her down. The only person she interacts with is Aurora/Rory. They’re two very different characters from different sides of the war, yet the longer they spend together, the more they find in common.
It’s a quiet, thoughtful story in which Mal is given far too much time alone to assess everything she knows or has been told, and the doubts that sometimes rise. Mal is instantly likable, despite her less than positive views of herself, and the choices she makes throughout prove she’s so much more than she thinks she is.
The romance is subtle and slow and the ending is far too abrupt, which is a shame, because this short novella has the potential to grow into something more. As it stands, though, it’s an enjoyable little tale that ponders good, bad and everything in between with an intriguing twist on an old fairytale.
